The Johnston Collection Project
Early in 2007 a working group was formed by the Wick Society to look into the issues surrounding the long-term care of the Johnston Collection.
Two key objectives are being followed.
Firstly, to develop the technical knowledge that will allow the Collection’s images to be made widely available in a digitised format for research and inspiration.
Ultimately, to demonstrate that both the Collection, and its on-going management, can meet the exacting standards required for formal recognition as a Collection of National Significance.
Research is continuing with a number of leading Universities and Museums, through correspondence and site visits, to learn from their experiences in developing similar projects.
As part of Wick’s contribution to the 2007 Moray Firth Flotilla a selection of 17 sea-related images from the Collection were made available as mounted prints. These digitised images are now being offered, for on-line order, at this web site. This gallery will be extended, and new galleries created, as images become available. An on-line purchase facility is under development.
This is just the first small step in opening up this remarkable Collection through the gateways of modern technology.
