About this recording

Whether it was fishing at the harbour, exploring Sinclair Girnigoe Castle or the courtyard at the Tower, Ackergill provided a vast playground for children growing up in the fifties and sixties.

Listen to Ian Leith recall some early memories of his Granny’s house, moving house and attending the local one teacher school at Ackergill. He talks about playing football, fishing and gathering whelks. He also reflects on less enjoyable tasks such as peat cutting and lifting tatties.
