About this recording

Listen to Janet Mowat recall the adventure she embarked upon when she joined Aberdeen University’s Outreach Office in Halkirk, working as PA to Donald Omand. In addition to typing many books edited by Donald, including the well-known Caithness Book, Janet assisted in the preparation of lectures and illustrated talks. The job entailed extensive travel throughout Europe. She also recalls preparing Field Club bulletins using a Gestetner duplicating machine.
Although born in Thurso, Janet moved to Halkirk after her marriage and became totally immersed in Halkirk village life. She became involved in the Boys’ Brigade, local Church, Halkirk Playgroup, Halkirk Heritage Society as secretary and organiser of the Halkirk Reminiscence Group, Chairperson of the Caithness Family History Society and the organiser of the long running Ceilidh Dancing Group held in the local Youth Club.

Janet tells this story in such a relaxed and easy going manner. Whilst sitting here with my cup of coffee, I could almost imagine Janet opposite a just chatting away. Very enjoyable.
