About this recording

Brian Sutherland looks back on his career in the offshore oil industry, reflecting upon the choices he has made and the changes that have taken place during his working life.
On leaving school Brian considered his options and embarked upon an apprenticeship as an instrument mechanic at Dounreay, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.
Shortly after successfully completing his apprenticeship, Brian weighed up his options, and made the decision to transfer from the Nuclear industry to the oil and gas industry. He found that ex-Dounreay apprentices were highly regarded and like many others, he was quickly promoted into lead roles.
In this interview, Brian maps his career history with oil company Shell and latterly AOC (Anasuria Operating Company). He talks about the changes that have taken place within the energy sector, as companies have become more environmentally aware, resulting in a move towards greener options.
Having recently opted for early retirement, Brian has also embraced change. He now lives on a croft, in a new energy efficient house, with the renewable energy Beatrice Offshore Windfarm in the background.
